چکیده

Carbon nanotube transistors combine molecular-scale dimensions with excellent electronic properties, offering unique opportunities for chemical and biological sensing. Here, we form supported lipid bilayers over single-walled carbon nanotube transistors. We first study the physical properties of the nanotube/supported lipid bilayer structure using fluorescence techniques. Whereas lipid molecules can diffuse freely across the nanotube, a membrane-bound protein (tetanus toxin) sees the nanotube as a barrier. Moreover, the size of the barrier depends on the diameter of the nanotube--with larger nanotubes presenting bigger obstacles to diffusion. We then demonstrate detection of protein binding (streptavidin) to the supported lipid bilayer using the nanotube transistor as a charge sensor. This system can be used as a platform to examine the interactions of single molecules with carbon nanotubes and has many potential applications for the study of molecular recognition and other biological processes occurring at cell membranes.

Substrate-supported lipid nanotube arrays.

This Communication describes the self-assembly of phospholipids into lipid nanotubes inside nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide substrate. Orientations of the lipid molecules in such lipid nanoscale structures were verified by high-resolution spin labeling EPR at 95 GHz. The static order parameter of lipids in such nanotube arrays was determined from low-temperature EPR spectra and was found to be...

Lipid nanoscaffolds in carbon nanotube arrays.

We present the fabrication of lipid nanoscaffolds inside carbon nanotube arrays by employing the nanostructural self-assembly of lipid molecules. The nanoscaffolds are finely tunable into model biomembrane-like architectures (planar), soft nanochannels (cylindrical) or 3-dimensionally ordered continuous bilayer structures (cubic). Carbon nanotube arrays hosting the above nanoscaffolds are forme...

Ultrashort single-walled carbon nanotubes in a lipid bilayer as a new nanopore sensor

An important issue in nanopore sensing is to construct stable and versatile sensors that can discriminate analytes with minute differences. Here we report a means of creating nanopores that comprise ultrashort single-walled carbon nanotubes inserted into a lipid bilayer. We investigate the ion transport and DNA translocation through single-walled carbon nanotube nanopores and find that our resu...

Fabrication of Carbon Nanotube/SiO2and Carbon Nanotube/SiO2/Ag Nanoparticles Hybrids by Using Plasma Treatment

Based on plasma-treated single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), SWCNT/SiO(2) and thiol groups-functionalized SWCNT/SiO(2) hybrids have been fabricated through a sol-gel process. By means of thiol groups, Ag nanoparticles have been in situ synthesized and bonded onto the SiO(2) shell of SWCNT/SiO(2) in the absence of external reducing agent, resulting in the stable carbon nanotube/SiO(2)/Ag nanop...

Integrating carbon nanotubes and lipid bilayer for biosensing.

Membrane proteins, which are the target of most drugs, are implicated in many critical cellular functions such as signal transduction, bioelectricity, exocytosis and endocytosis. Therefore, developing techniques to investigate the functions of membrane proteins is obviously important. Here, we have developed a novel system by integrating artificial lipid bilayer (biomimetic membrane) with singl...
